The Vortex Razor HD 27-60x85 angled spotting scope is the 85 mm model of Vortex's high-end range of spotting scopes. Apochromatic optical system (APO), XR™ Plus treatments on all air-glass surfaces, dielectric-treated prisms and argon-purged waterproof construction: it is aimed at the demanding observer who wants to take full advantage of high magnifications, for mountain hunting, long-range precision shooting, ornithology or wildlife observation.
The Razor HD, the reference range of Vortex spotting scopes
At Vortex, spotting scopes are divided into several ranges: Diamondback HD, Viper HD then Razor HD.The Razor HD 27-60x85 sits at the top of this offering.Where a Diamondback HD focuses on strong observation capacity at an affordable price, the Razor HD aims for the best image quality that Vortex offers: more resolution, more advanced correction of chromatic aberrations, more homogeneous sharpness to the edges of the field and better performance in low light.
It is this optical difference which justifies its positioning: The difference is especially felt at high magnifications and in difficult conditions, precisely where an entry-level or mid-range spotting scope shows its limits.

Optical system: APO, HD, XR™ Plus and dielectric treatments
Apochromatic system (APO)
The lenses are matched to correct colors across the entire visible spectrum.Concretely, the colored fringes which appear on the contrasting contours (branch against a sky background, light plumage, black and white target) are greatly reduced, which preserves the sharpness and fidelity of the colors even at high magnification.
HD Optical System
Selected glass elements improve resolution, limit chromatic aberrations and provide excellent color fidelity, edge-to-edge sharpness and good light transmission.
XR™ Plus Treatments
These are Vortex's most advanced anti-reflective treatments.Applied to all air-glass surfaces, they maximize light transmission, benefiting clarity and low-light performance.
Dielectric treatments of prisms
The prisms receive a high-reflectivity multi-layer treatment which contributes to a bright, clear and color-accurate image.
Plasma Tech
This process of applying treatments improves their durability and performance over time.
ArmorTek®
The exposed outer lenses receive this ultra-hard coating, intended to protect them against scratches, oily marks and dirt.
Understanding 27-60x Zoom: Maximum Magnification Is Not Everything
A spotting scope should not be judged solely on its maximum magnification.The more you magnify, the darker the image, the more the field becomes smaller and the more vibrations and turbulence in the air become visible.The optical quality of the Razor HD allows high magnifications to be used more often, but it does not eliminate heat haze or the effect of an unstable tripod.
The exit pupil, a brightness indicator
The exit pupil is calculated by dividing the objective lens diameter by the magnification.The larger it is, the brighter and more comfortable the image appears.On this 27-60x85 spotting scope, it goes from approximately 3.15 mm at 27x (85 ÷ 27) to approximately 1.42 mm at 60x.
A zoom that starts at 27x
The minimum magnification of 27x is higher than many zoom spotting scopes which start at 20x.The wide-angle eyepiece largely compensates: the field of view reaches approximately 39 m at 1000 m at minimum magnification, which is still comfortable for scanning an area.The exit pupil at minimum magnification, however, is smaller than at 20x.To spot a moving subject very quickly, many observers use their binoculars, then the spotting scope for detailed examination.
Actual zoom behavior, setting by setting
| Magnification | Main use | Image behavior | Exit pupil |
|---|---|---|---|
| 27x | Spotting, scanning an area, general observation | Brightest image, widest field (approximately 39 m at 1000 m) | ≈ 3.15mm |
| 30x | Common observation | Good balance between detail and field of view | ≈ 2.83mm |
| 40x | Detailed observation at medium and long distances | Tripod stability becomes more important | ≈ 2.13mm |
| 50x | Finding fine details at long distances | More dependent on light and atmosphere | 1.70mm |
| 60x | Maximum magnification, fine examination | To be reserved for good conditions of light, stability and atmosphere | ≈ 1.42mm |
In practice:
- At 27x, the image is the brightest and the field widest: this is the tracking and scanning setting.
- Between 30x and 40x, the spotting scope offers the most versatile compromise between detail, brightness and stability.This is the beach that we use most often.
- Between 50x and 60x, the optical quality of the Razor HD allows you to take advantage of the high magnification when conditions are good.On a hot day, in the presence of mirage or at the end of the day, going down to 40x often gives a sharper and more usable image.
The benefit of an 85mm lens
The 85mm lens collects more light than a 65mm model with comparable optical design.This advantage is mainly felt:
- At high magnifications, where the exit pupil becomes smaller;
- When the light fades, at dawn, dusk or on overcast days, in addition to XR™ Plus treatments.
The counterpart is physical: with approximately 1.86 kg and 39.4 cm in length, the Razor HD 27-60x85 is neither compact nor light.It is suitable for users who are willing to wear bulky optics to benefit from the best optical potential of the Vortex range.
Why choose an angled spotting scope?
On this version, the eyepiece is inclined relative to the body of the spotting scope.This elbow construction has several advantages:
- A more comfortable viewing position during long sessions;
- A tripod placed lower, therefore more stable, especially in the wind;
- Easy sharing between users of different sizes;
- A particular interest in upward observation (slopes, ridges, treetops), in the mountains, on the lookout and from a fixed position.
A user who wants to very quickly acquire a target in line with their gaze, or who observes primarily from a car window, may sometimes prefer a straight version.
A stable tripod, essential for high magnifications
A stable tripod is strongly recommended, and in practice becomes essential to correctly exploit high magnifications. The tripod is not included with the spotting scope.
- At 27x, observation remains relatively tolerant, but a tripod is already necessary.
- Around 40x, the vibrations become much more visible: the slightest contact or gust of wind is seen in the image.
- At 60x, the quality and rigidity of the tripod directly influence the actually perceptible finesse.Associating an optic of this level with a light or unstable tripod means losing part of its interest.
The Razor HD 27-60x85 is Arca-Swiss compatible : it mounts directly on a compatible head, without additional plate.It can also be used on a car window mount (sold separately).

Helical Focus Helical Focus
Focusing does not happen through a small side wheel, but through a large helical ring which surrounds the body of the telescope.You turn it to sharpen it, with one hand, without looking for the control.
- Intuitive handling ;
- Easily accessible adjustment whatever the orientation of the telescope on its tripod;
- A sleek exterior profile ;
- No protruding dial likely to hang in a bag or cover, making it easier to store and set up.
Eye relief and eyeglass wearers
Eye relief is 16.7-17.0mm.It is suitable for many observers, and Vortex offers a Razor HD Long Eye Relief eyepiece, sold separately, for this scenario.
Robust construction for demanding conditions
- Argon purge and O-rings : the interior is filled with argon gas and sealed with O-rings, which prevents internal fogging during temperature changes and protects against humidity.
- Water resistance : the spotting scope is designed to withstand bad weather.No depth or duration of immersion being officially indicated, this tightness should not be considered as authorization for prolonged immersion.
- Anti-fog : designed to withstand a wide temperature range.
- Shock resistance : the design is intended to withstand significant impacts.
- Rubber frame : it ensures a secure, non-slip grip and protects the body of the spotting scope.
Uses of the Vortex Razor HD 27-60x85 spotting scope
Mountain hunting and blinds
This is one of the uses for which Vortex designed the Razor HD: prospecting slopes and ridges, evaluating an animal at a long distance (age, trophy, condition), monitoring an area from a fixed position.The angled construction makes it easy to look upward, and the optical quality helps distinguish fine details on a distant animal.
Long-range precision shooting and competition
The spotting scope allows you to control impacts and observe the target without leaving your position.No precise distance can be guaranteed: visibility of impacts depends on caliber, impact diameter, target contrast, light and atmospheric turbulence.In hot weather, mirage can make impacts difficult to distinguish, even with optics of this level.To measure deviations and announce corrections, Vortex offers a Razor HD reticle eyepiece, sold separately.
Ornithology and bird watching
APO color correction and edge-to-edge sharpness are particularly valuable for identifying waders, raptors or seabirds at a distance, when plumage details matter.The angled construction makes long observatory sessions more comfortable.
Wildlife and nature observation
Tracking of deer, chamois, ibexes or foxes at long distances, observation of behavior without approach.
Twilight observation
The 85mm objective lens and XR™ Plus coatings promote observation in declining light, preferably at low to intermediate magnifications, where the exit pupil is largest.
Coastal and long-range observation
Seabirds, ships, landscapes.By the sea, argon purging and waterproofing are appreciable, but the heat haze and humid air often limit the benefit of very high magnifications.
