Thermal imaging does not require visible light. However, thermal contrast varies with the weather, the background and the time of day. Darkness does not guarantee that every subject will be detected or identified.

Understanding sensor resolution

Sensor resolution is one of the factors affecting detail and price. Common formats include 160 × 120, 256 × 192, 320 × 240, 384 × 288, 640 × 512, 1024 × 768 and 1280 × 1024 pixels. Higher resolution can support more detail, but the objective lens, thermal sensitivity and image processing also matter. Detection and identification are different: a distant heat source may be visible without enough detail to identify it.
