The Vortex Diamondback HD 20-60x85 angled spotting scope combines an 85mm objective lens, a 20x to 60x zoom and a rugged, waterproof, argon-purged construction. It is aimed at the observer who wants a strong long-distance observation capacity, for ornithology, wildlife, hunting or sports shooting, without reaching the price of the higher Vortex ranges.

An 85mm Vortex spotting scope for long-distance observation

The Diamondback HD 20-60x85 is the large diameter version of the Diamondback HD range.Its role is clear: to offer an extended magnification range, a bright objective and a construction designed for regular outdoor use, in a more accessible positioning than the Viper HD and Razor HD spotting scopes.

However, it must be seen honestly.The Diamondback HD is not the optical equivalent of a Viper HD or a Razor HD, and it does not offer the same rendering at 60x as these higher ranges.Its interest lies elsewhere: Obtaining real observation capacity thanks to an 85 mm objective and a versatile zoom, with the robustness and the Vortex guarantee, for a controlled budget.

Understanding 20-60x Zoom: Maximum Magnification Is Not Everything

A spotting scope should not be judged solely on its maximum magnification.The more you magnify, the darker the image, the more the field becomes smaller and the more vibrations and turbulence in the air become visible.In practice, the best setting is the one that gives the most readable image under the current conditions, and this is not always 60x.

The exit pupil, a brightness indicator

The exit pupil is calculated by dividing the objective lens diameter by the magnification.The larger it is, the brighter and more comfortable the image appears.On this 20-60x85 spotting scope, it goes from 4.25 mm at 20x (85 ÷ 20) to approximately 1.42 mm at 60x.

Actual zoom behavior, setting by setting

In practice:

• At 20x, the image is bright and the field wide (approximately 36 m to 1000 m): this is the ideal setting for finding a bird, following an animal or scanning a slope.
• Between 30x and 40x, the spotting scope generally offers the most versatile compromise between detail, brightness and stability.This is the beach that we use most often.
• Between 50x and 60x, the potential level of detail increases, but the image becomes more sensitive to vibrations, fading light and atmospheric turbulence.On a hot day or late in the day, going down to 40x often results in a sharper, more usable image.

The 85mm lens collects more light than a 65mm model with comparable optical design.This advantage is mainly felt:

• At high magnifications, where the exit pupil becomes smaller and every millimeter of diameter counts;
• When the light fades, at dawn, dusk or on overcast days.

The counterpart is physical: with approximately 1.73 kg and 40.6 cm in length, this 85 mm spotting scope is neither compact nor ultralight.It is suitable for the user who agrees to carry a larger optic in exchange for a large diameter objective, and who most often observes from a fixed position or near his vehicle.

Why choose an angled spotting scope?

On this version, the eyepiece is inclined relative to the body of the spotting scope.This elbow construction has several advantages:

• A more comfortable viewing position during long sessions;
• A tripod placed lower, therefore more stable, especially in the wind;
• Easy sharing between users of different heights, without readjusting the tripod height each time;
• A particular interest in ornithology, on the lookout and from a fixed position, as well as to observe subjects located at height.

A user who wants to very quickly acquire a target in line with their gaze, or who observes primarily from a car window, may sometimes prefer a straight version.

A stable tripod, essential for high magnifications

A stable tripod is strongly recommended, and in practice becomes essential to correctly exploit high magnifications. The tripod is not included with the spotting scope.

• At 20x, the observation remains relatively tolerant to small movements.
• Around 40x, the vibrations become much more visible: the slightest contact or gust of wind is seen in the image.
• At 60x, the quality and rigidity of the tripod directly influence the actually perceptible finesse.

Sports shooting and impact control
The spotting scope allows you to monitor impacts on targets without leaving your position, when the distance, the size of the impacts and the atmospheric conditions allow it.No precise distance can be guaranteed: visibility of impacts depends on caliber, impact diameter, target contrast, light and atmospheric turbulence.In hot weather, mirage can make impacts difficult to distinguish.
