Bushnell Legend L-Series 10x42 binoculars: review and comparison
Following our review of the Bushnell Legend E-Series 10x42, we compare it with the Legend L-Series 10x42. The two share a similar outward design, magnesium construction, RainGuard HD protection and the same 10x42 format.
The key optical difference is ED Prime glass. This helps reduce colour fringing and makes the L-Series worth considering for more demanding observation.

Legend E or Legend L: what changes?
| Model | Position in the range | ED glass | Intended use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legend E-Series | Entry point to the range | No | General outdoor observation |
| Legend L-Series | Middle tier | ED Prime | More demanding observation |
| Legend M-Series | Upper tier | ED glass with additional prism coatings | Enthusiast use |
ED stands for extra-low dispersion. Its main benefit is controlling chromatic aberration: the coloured fringes that can appear around contrasting edges. This is particularly useful when observing a dark subject against bright sky.
Handling
The E and L models have a similar feel. Magnesium construction and rubber armour provide a robust grip, while the focusing wheel is designed for smooth, quick adjustments. Multi-position eyecups help you find a comfortable eye position.
The familiar handling means the main reason to move up to the L-Series is its optical design.
Comparing the view
The original French review reports observations of herons more than 300 m away, birds of prey over the Monts d'Arrée, boats off Saint-Malo and roe deer at woodland edges.
In that comparison, the L-Series was judged to show cleaner outlines, more distinct fine detail and stronger contrast. ED Prime glass helps reduce purple or green fringes around dark subjects against a bright background.
These are the reviewer's qualitative impressions, rather than measured resolution or transmission results.

Viewing as daylight fades
The French comparison describes observation around half an hour before nightfall. It reports that the L-Series retained more subtle contrast, helping animals stand out from their surroundings and making plumage details easier to distinguish.
ED glass controls colour fringing; low-light performance also depends on the complete optical design, coatings and viewing conditions. It should not be judged from the ED label alone.
RainGuard HD protection
Like the E-Series, the L-Series uses RainGuard HD. This coating reduces the effect of water droplets on the external lenses, helping maintain a usable image in damp weather.
It is a useful feature for year-round outdoor observation, alongside appropriate care and drying after use.
Who is the Legend L for?
- Birdwatchers.
- Hunters and wildlife observers.
- Nature travellers.
- Regular hikers.
- Users seeking a binocular for long-term use.

Our assessment
The Legend E-Series is already a capable option. The French review favours the L-Series after extended comparison, citing a cleaner image, stronger contrast, less visual fatigue and better fine detail.
If your budget permits, the Legend L-Series 10x42 is worth prioritising for birdwatching and wildlife, where high-contrast edges and fine details matter. The Legend M sits above it in the range with additional prism coatings.
